What is Clean Eating?
In a nutshell: Clean Eating is eating the so called “clean foods” , but the definition vary depending upon the person you ask. To one person it may be eating vegan foods, to another it may be eating organic foods, to someone else only gluten-free foods are clean, to a clean bodybuilder eating sprouts maybe the clean foods, but if you ask me I’d say and I quote,
“The only way to actually eat clean is to scrub your food down with a disinfectant soap”
As it turns out the term “clean eating” or “clean foods” is very subjective. You may as well ask a 100 people and get 100 different answers. If you ask me I’d say it is through these kinds of terms and people who spread it, the world’s biggest dietary myths(see below) originated.
- eat 6-8 small meals per day
- eat every 2-3 hours
- avoid rice(carbs) at night
- skipping breakfast will make you fat
- drinking honey in hot water helps for weight loss(OMG)
- drink green tea to keep your metabolism up, etc, etc.
The list goes on and on. All these are just a blatant lie sprung up as a result of “people without any scientific knowledge”(bro’s) spreading non sense(bro-science). The most annoying thing about “clean eating people” is their “State of mind”. Some of the people who eat this way view themselves as being better than the people who eat normally or the ones following IIFYM. This is just outrageous.
This is how a typical conversation would go,
Person: Is it ok If I eat this cup cake?
Clean Eating: What? Seriously? Cupcake is not clean and eating it makes you fat.
Person: But…
Clean Eating: NO!
There isn’t much fun, is there?
The reality is it doesn’t matter if you follow “clean eating” or IIFYM, It doesn’t matter from where the calories come from; be it from a cheese pizza or a cup of broccoli. A calorie is a calorie. You can still gain weight eating only broccoli and you can still lose weight eating only cheese pizza, all that matters at the end of the day is if you are in a “Calorie Deficit” or not. This is where IIFYM comes into play.
What is IIFYM?
IIFYM stands for “If It Fits Your Macros”. In a nutshell: IIFYM means You can eat whatever the hell you want, basically there is no specific list of foods you should or shouldn’t eat. This is that much simpler than any other diet out there. Here’s how a simple conversation would go,
Person: Is It ok if I eat this cup cake?
IIFYM: Sure! Why not? Eat it… If It Fits Your Macros.
It is as simple as that.
Now some might ask,
“So this means I can eat fast-foods all day every day?”
The answer is No. This is one of the biggest problems with IIFYM. People take this diet very literally and eat nothing but fast-foods and sodas. This is also plain wrong and stupid to say the least.
“But Why? You said I can eat anything?”
Yes I did, but I also said all that matters at the end of the day is calories and macros.
Would you be able to figure out how much calories does the fast-food have? No. Would you be able to figure out the macro-nutrients of the fast-food? No. Because it is just not possible. You can’t possibly ask the chef how much oil does the food have? can you? No.
So now you might ask
“So If I know the calories and macro-nutrients of the fast-food, I can have it?”
The answer is Yes. You can. But this is generally possible only if you prepare the fast-food by yourself or keep track of what all has been added to the food during cooking.
“So Why should I follow IIFYM?”
Simple. The freedom and flexibility. The absence of all those annoying rules and restrictions. The freedom to eat the foods you love and avoid the foods you hate.
What more can you ask?
